Flex and ProFlex are safe natural alternatives to pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories, which are known to have devastating side effects. Other commonly used anti-inflammatories, including Rimadyl (carprofen) and Previcox (firocoxib), inhibit both pro-inflammatory cyclooxygenase enzymes (COX-2) as well as the gastro-protective form of the enzyme (COX-1). The COX-1 inhibitory activity of these products and associated side effects (including elevated liver enzyme levels, gastrointestinal ulcers and kidney damage)can make them unsafe for long-term daily use in many individuals.
Conversely, resveratrol is safe for long-term daily use, as it inhibits gene expression of the COX-2 enzyme without affecting the production of COX-1 enzymes and their gastro-protective byproduct prostaglandins. Rather than inhibiting active COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes circulating in the body, resveratrol inhibits the gene expression of COX-2 enzymes, thus reducing the level of this enzyme present in the body. Resveratrol inhibits a nuclear cofactor (NF-kappaB) that is required for gene expression of COX-2 enzymes, as well as many other pro-inflammatory compounds such as interleukins, tumor necrosis factor alpha, peroxidases, lipoxygenases and nitrous oxide synthases, but it does not affect the production of gastro-protective prostaglandins. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a primary component of cartilage and the joint-lubricating synovial fluid. Levels of HA can be diminished in these connective tissues due to injury, overuse and/or aging. Oral administration of bioavailable forms of HA, such as that in petsoothicals Flex™, replenish HA levels in connective tissues and support continued mobility in your dog.
